Easter is a recognition of the death and resurrection of Christ. Jesus died on the cross of Calvary so that we could be saved. He was a literal sacrifice, the Lamb that shed His blood to appease God. Without His sacrifice we would end up in eternal damnation. Without bloodshed, there would be no escape from hell. Without God's mercy, we would be living a useless life.
But His death on the cross has put us in the time of grace. His death was the marriage proposal, beckoning the Church to be His Bride.
