Before your light can shine, there has to be some kind of fire. Instead of being pressured by peers to be more like the world, hang out with God, so you become more like Him.
Before we get that true fire, God consumes all the sins. (Heb 12:29)
Before we get that true fire, God consumes all the sins. (Heb 12:29)
To consume means:
1. To kill
2. To waste
3. To use
4. To eat up
The fire of God should consume every sin in our lives so we can be set ablaze and used for God.
Chaff is the covering of seeds or wheat. When harvested, those coverings are removed in order to reveal the more beneficial part within. Sin is like chaff, which isn't useful.
Jesus says that when we repent, we will be baptized. Likewise our sin, our chaff, will be burned with “unquenchable fire”. Anything that will prevent God from using us should be taken away from our lives. (Matt. 3:11-12)
Wheat is a grain that has chaff. The fire of God will consume everything that is useless when it occurs in someone's life. However, it requires submission to God. God will not force anything on anyone. For sin to be taken from our lives, we must be willing. Jesus is a gentleman; He knocks on the door of our hearts. However, if we don’t give Him an open invitation, He won’t come in. (Rev. 3:20)
To be ablaze means:
1. To shine
2. To be radiant
3. To be enlightened
4. To produce bright colors
After the fire of God is kindled in our lives, and we are set ablaze for God, what do we do to keep the fire burning?
We need to live for God, and be lights of the world. “A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.” (Matt. 5:14)
For those who know a bit of US History, have you heard of the phrase, ‘one if by land, two if by sea?’ This was coined from the Paul Revere experience. Before the battles of Lexington and Concord, Paul Revere asked a friend to send him a signal to appear in a church steeple. If there was one lantern burning, the British army were on their way to attack by land. If there were two, they were traveling by water. If the signal ever arrived, Revere along with other companions were to warn the colonists of the British’s advancement.
Christians are very similar to this. We are like the lanterns. The lanterns were hung in order to signal that the enemy was on their way. As lights of the world, we need to warn our peers of the upcoming Judgment Day. Our lights need to reflect God, and direct others to Christ. (See: Back to School)
If you are struggling with sin, ask God to consume all the sins in your life, and set you ablaze with the Holy Ghost. Feel free to drop a prayer request.
