You decide to wait a couple of days to talk about God with Sarah. Meanwhile, you continue to eat with her at lunch. Your youth pastor continues to encourage everyone to invite friends. Finally, you ask her.
Sarah looks at you for a long moment and answers, “I’m not a Christian.” Your stomach drops at the outright rejection. You had prayed for God to give you courage just to ask her, but maybe it was too much to wish she would say yes...

“But,” she continues, “sure, why not?”
You aren’t sure if you heard her right, but she smiles, so your ears are probably functioning. It’s a refreshing feeling, and you thank God silently. It feels like you’re finally getting somewhere.

Two weeks fly by in a blur. You realize with a sinking feeling that you haven’t brought God in your conversation with Sarah. You’ve been praying for a while, and the time just never seems right. Are you supposed to wait for that perfect moment, or just dive through without regrets?
Your mom drops you off at the ice rink. Your friends from youth group are there, welcoming you. But you look around, trying to find Sarah. You finally notice her hanging around the vending machines. (She actually came!)
You pull her towards your group of friends, and they welcome her to the family immediately. She smiles a lot more, and you wonder why you didn’t invite her to youth group before.
Soon enough, you all get on the ice. Speed races ensue, and you all find yourselves laughing. Sarah soon skates out, and you join her. One of your friends, James, tags along. You three buy drinks from the vending machine and start talking about life in general. Then, James asks, “Sarah, have you ever thought about God before?”
You choke on your Coke, and keep your eyes down. James was always so straight to the point. Sarah hesitates before she says that she always thought of Him as “the big Guy in the sky”. James starts to explain that he’s so much more than that. After some time, you dive in too, and you both talk about God’s love. Sarah nods, and asks a few questions, each of them being answered.
The conversation hits a soft lull. “Anyone up for some more skating?” James asks.
You and Sarah agree, and join the throng of teens on the ice.

It took some time, but you finally got through to Sarah. Ahem, you mean, God got through to Sarah. Not only that, but you also tried to reflect God in your life. You became more prayerful, and relied on God, rather than your own strength. Communication with God was key, you learned, as James later revealed that God led him to talk to Sarah. Over the next couple of weeks, you patiently talked to her. She also accepted many more invitations to youth group, until she was going every week.
A month later, she confides at lunch that she prayed for God to receive her into the Family. “I’m so happy for you!” you shout so loud, that almost everyone stares at you. But who cares? God finally touched her heart.
But...remember the guy that invited you to lunch earlier? Remember his friends?
You’ve got more work to do, soldier.
